On the way, we spotted a man holding a piece of paper that said, “Lost my job. Family to feed.” At this store, a sight like this is not normal. My 10-year-old noticed him and made a comment(评论) on how bad it must be to have to stand outside in the cold wind. In the store, I asked each of my kids to pick something they thought our “friend” there would appreciate. They got apples, a sandwich and a bottle of juice. Then my 17-year-old suggested giving him a gift card. I thought about it. We were low on cash ourselves, but … well, sometimes giving from our need instead of our abundance(充裕) is just what we need to do! All the kids declared(宣称) something they could do away with for the week. When we handed him the bag of food, he lit up and thanked us with watery eyes. When I handed him the gift card, saying he could use it for whatever his family might need, he burst into tears. This has been a wonderful experience for our family. For days the kids have been looking for others we can help! Things would have played out so differently if I had simply said, “No, we really don’t have money to give more.” Stepping out not only helped a brother in need, it also gave my kids the __________ taste of helping others. It’ll go a long way with them.

31. From the passage, what is TRUE about the writer’s family? A. There were two children in her family. B. They lived a rich and generous life. C. They helped the poor man at last. D. They didn’t have any money to help others.

Argentina阿根廷in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economic boom(经济繁荣), and the capital, Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as many foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires looking for jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango(探戈舞) came into being.

At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes(阶级). It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time women were fewer than men, so if a man didn’t want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the women. In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. The interest in international dance was especially strong in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found in Paris theaters. After tango dances from Argentina arrive in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes, though not everyone liked the new dance, the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular.

The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers(士兵) who returned to the United States from World War I brought the tango to North America, It reached Japan in 1926, and in 2003 a tango dancer of South Korea was hired to act as a kind of dance ambassador(大使) and promote tango dancing throughout South Korea.

Honey(蜂蜜) from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees’ nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in the tree, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper -- a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax(蜡) in the beehives(蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees’ nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always fall to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit. Honey-lover’s helper Honey from the African forest ? To: sunshineclothesstore@126.com From: cathy@qq.com[来源:学#科#网Z#X#X#K] Subject: complaint Dear Sales Manager, I am writing to complain about what one of your saleswomen has done. Last Sunday, I went to your store to look for a T-shirt. When I asked a saleswoman, Ms Wang for help in finding my size, she told me that she was busy and said impolitely that if I couldn’t find one, it meant the store didn’t have it. I couldn’t stand it. Would you mind answering my questions? ● What is a saleswoman’s job? ● As a saleswoman, what quality should she have? ● What do you think of Ms Wang’s behaviour? ● Do you care about a customer’s feeling? Why or why not? I felt that Ms Wang was rude. I hope you deal with it seriously. I look forward to hearing from you soon and a more pleasant shopping experience at your store next time. Best wishes Cathy 注意:1. 词数80左右。回复信的开头和结尾已经写好,不计入总词数; 2. 回复中不得提及真实的人名、校名等相关信息。

Dear Cathy,

Thanks for your letter. I am sorry to learn that you have got the bad treatment. I have known all about it. Now let me answer your questions. As a saleswoman, it’s her duty to offer good service to her customers, such as giving help and advice to them, answering all kinds of questions and satisfying their needs. She should be kind, helpful, patient, generous, smart and so on. So I don’t think Ms Wang’s behaviour was good and her service isn’t up to standard at all. She doesn’t have the good quality a saleswoman should have. As we all know, a customer is our God, so we care about your feelings very much.

I am sorry that this has made you feel unpleasant. We have done something to deal with it. I think you’ll be satisfied. I hope you will go on supporting us and enjoy our excellent service next time. Best wishes Sales Manager
