Volcanoes have been erupting since shortly after the earth was formed. About twenty

B. In August, 2017 D. In January, 2018

C. In October, 2017

volcanic eruptions occur each day on earth. Some of these eruptions are quiet. Others are violently explosive. Either way, volcanoes can be very dangerous.

Since 1700, more than 250,000 people have been killed by volcanic activities. Entire towns

have been wiped out. Many acres of forests and farmlands have been ruined.

The most destructive volcano, so far, has been Mount Tambora in Indonesia. The explosive

eruption killed over 10,000 people. Huge pyroclastic(火山碎屑) flows entered the sea and produced tsunamis. 82,000 more people died of starvation after the eruption. Crops and animals used for food died, resulting in a widespread famine.

Another damaging eruption also occurred in Indonesia. In 1883, Krakatoa erupted violently.

The biggest danger from this eruption was the tsunami that followed. Krakatoa’s crater fell down in the explosion. Part of it sunk below sea level. A wall of water over thirty meters high killed over 35,000 people.

Indonesia has also been the scene of other dangerous volcanic eruptions. In 1882, the

eruption of Gulunggung killed over four thousand people. In 1919, Kelut erupted, killing more than five thousand people. Most of the deaths in these two eruptions were from dangerous mudflows.

Mount Pelee in Mrtinique erupted in 1902. Almost 30,000 people were killed as a result of

ash flows. Mudflows during the eruption of Ruiz in Columbia in 1985 killed over 25,000 people.
