Self-introduction
Bosun
Hello. Gentlemen! My name is Wang Lin. I have worked as a Bosun for 5 ships, nearly seven years. I have ever worked on Bulk carrier, general cargo, and container vessel, oil tanker and ro-ro ships.
I am from Jiangsu province. I am married. I have a daughter ( or son ). My wife and son are both very lovely. I will work very hard if I can work in your company. AB
Good morning/good afternoon. I am from Shanghai. There are four people in my family, my father, my wife, my son and I. I have a very happy family. I was born in 1968 and I worked as a seaman for 7 years and AB for 4 ships nearly 5 years.
As an AB, I will under the leadership of the Bosun and the officers. I will do the watchkeeping every day and steer the ship under the instruction of the duty officers. I will also do some hard work, such as washing, cleaning the cargo hold, scraping the rust, cargo watch, sea watch, skipping, cargo watch, port watch, stowage watch, raising the flag, anchoring, mooring, unmooring, fasten the wire, painting, welding, checking the cable, and so on. I am an OS. My name is Li pin. I worked for 2 years as an OS. On board, I will do all kind of work under the leadership of the bosun, officers.
I love the job very much, I will not complain if you ask me to work a lot.
Oiler No 1 （机工长）
I am a oiler No1. I work as Oiler No 1 for 6 years, on 4 ships. I have worked for Shangdong International Shipping Company for 8 years. Last year, I was registered in Huayang and I am a contracting seaman of Huayang.
As a Oiler No1, I am under the leadership of the 1/E or C/E. Give orders to the fitters and wipers and cadets. Do some cleaning work, welding, painting, and checking the machines, including the main engine, the generators, and other auxiliary engines. I like working hard.
Fitter and other positions
I should work under the instruction of the Oiler No 1 and do all the jobs they ask me to do. I am very hardworking. I will not complain if they ask me to work a lot including overtime work.
Cook
I am a cook. My name is Peng Yang. I work as a cook for ten years. I have the national 3rd class cook license. As a cook, I can do all kind of dishes of Chinese food. Everyday, I am sure they will have new dishes to eat. I will try to save money for the seamen. I think hygiene is very important to the cook’s job. I will be very diligent and make sure that the food the cabinet, the kitchen, the icebox and dishes and plates are clean enough.

轮机及甲板部分普通船员部分
对于船东来说，普通船员在船上是干活的，因此，他们希望船员给他们留下的印象是具有很强的服从意识和娴熟的技术。同时，普通船员的外表和言行举止看上去没有任何酗酒、迷惑、以及暴力倾向也特别重要。此外，尽管普通船员并不是对外人员，但是，给人一个干净利落的形象也特别重要。所以，即使是普通船员，在面试时适当包装一下自己还是应该的；也许就因为你看上去干净利落而比其他候选人有竞争力。
通常而言，在面试普通船员（含甲板和轮机）时，船东不会提出很多专业性很强的英语问题。但是，水手长（BOSUN）和Oiler No.1 的英语水平还是要求的，因为在船东看来，BOSUN和Oiler No1是甲板部分及轮机部分仅次于干部船员的PETTY OFFICERS， 他们要经常和船长、大副、老轨、以及大管轮沟通。对于AB、OS和COOK以及MASS BOY的提问，通常涉及到他们的资历、家庭情况。总的来说，对于普通船员来说，英语的好坏并没有太大的关系，因为在整套班子外派的情况下，干部船员都是本国人，只要干部船员能讲英语也就够了。尽管如此，若你能和船东用英语进行非常简单的沟通，熟悉船上一些工具的英语名称及日常用的英语还是能为你的面试成功提供很大的帮助的。但是，对那些要上的船是那种类似于“联合国”的班子（即船员来自几个不同的国家，必须用英语来作为工作语言）的普通船员来说，船东对普通船员英语也是有很高要求的，欧洲和美洲船东对英语的要求尤其较高，因为你连最简单的工作用英语都不会的话，很容易出大问题。其实，从实践看，普通船员英文水平偏低也是制约中国船员外派的最主要的因素之一。因此，我们希望，广大普通船员，特别是年轻的普通船员，同样要努力提高自己的英语水平。
根据笔者的经验，船东提问普通船员的问题一般都不会非常专业。通常，他们在基本了解了你的工作经历和个人的一些情况后就不会再问更多的问题了。偶尔也有一些船东，特别是那些香港、台湾、新加坡等讲汉语的船东，他们会问一些关于你的工作常识的一些问题。因为本书主要是关于船员英语考核方面的问题，所以就无法全部赘述了。下面，就不同的职位简单列举几个问题，供参考。另外，书后附上船员生活和工作中常用的英语词汇和短句，并不是要求大家把所有的词汇都背下来（若能背下来更好），只是希望大家在平时工作中可以参考。
普通船员常见问题
Bosun（水手长）
水手长是甲板上仅次于驾驶员的PETTY OFFICER， 船东往往对水手长的要求较高，不但希望水手长有丰富的工作经验，还要求水手长的英文水平要高于其他普通水手。此外，水手长还应该具备较好的沟通能力，即和上上下下的船员的沟通能力。还要求水手长有一定的领导和组织能力，因为水手长要组织并领导甲板上的其他水手完成大副、船长、和其他干部船员布置的任务。实践表明，光会干活而不会领导他人的水手长并不是一个非常合格的水手长。

船东希望水手长具有很丰富的工作经验和管理经验，因为水手长要在具体的工作中带领其他水手干活，没有一定的经验和管理水平是很难胜任这个工作的。但是，水手长还应该有很好的服从意识，因为水手长毕竟是在干部船员的领导下工作。显得太世故并不是一件好事。
2. What was your duty on board the last vessel? 上条船做水手长的主要工作职责是什么？
I worked under the C/O and I assisted the C/O in performing various duty of Deck Department and shall in person, organize and execute the duties ordered by the C/O. Including the following: (1) to make my rounds all over the decks to see everything is in order; (2) to arrange for the jobs for the rating in the deck department; (3) under the leadership and with approval of the C/O, carry out the maintenance of hull, deck machinery, equipment, cargo gears and other; (4) handle the administration of the vessels deck inventory and running stores for his consideration and final approval; (5) arrange for sea watch, port watch, cargo watch for the ratings; (6) maintenance of cleanliness and hygiene in the vessel (7) the command of the ratings during anchoring and berthing operations; (8) any other tasks given by the master or C/O.
3. Do you have the watch keeping license? 你有没有值班证书？
Yes, I do.
通常来说，船上的BOSUN，AB等职位要操舵值班，具备STCW95公约下的值班证书很重要。
4. How many years have you worked as a bosun? When did you start work as a seaman? How many ships have you worked as a boatman? 干几年水手长了？什么时候开始干船员的。做过几条船的水头？
参考答案：For five years. I started to work as a seaman ten years ago. I have worked as a bosun for four ships.
5. Do you like drinking alcohol? As far as you know, what is the maximum blood alcohol concentration (BAC) rate on board? 你喜欢喝酒吗？你认为在船上酒精的含量不能超过身体体重的多大的比重？
According to the ISM, the BAC shall not be more than 0.04% by weight any time when being tested. But watch keepers are not allowed to drink any alcoholic beverage 4 hours before their watch.
6. When you are on watch keeping, if you find something wrong with the vessel in some part, what should you do? 当你值班时，若发现甲板部有很大的问题，该怎么做？
I shall report it to the watching offices immediately. （我要马上报告值班干部船员。）
7. What should be born in mind when you paint?
I shall choose the appropriate paints; choose the right brushed, keep the painted area clean and dry. I should choose the beat weather condition when the painting work is done (usually from 5 degrees to 25 degrees). Paint in correct order, usually from left to right, from up to the down side,

from inside to outside. Enough intervals should be kept between two paintings. Keep safety measure and protection. Do not make any pollution at any time and any place. 8. Tell us the names of some marks on the shell plate.
There are draught marks, deck line mark, load line (winter, summer, tropical fresh water, timber) mark, tonnage mark, bulbous bow and thruster marks, tug pushing point mark and so on.
Questions for AB
1. How long have you worked as an AB? How many ships have you worked as an AB?
你做AB有多长时间了？在几条船上做过AB？
2. When you are steering, what should be especially careful about?
当你操舵时，应该特别注意什么？
Pay full attention to the helm without doing something else and listen to the instruction of the duty officer any time. At the same time, if I can not understand the orders from the officers, I shall ask for clarification. Whenever I find something unusual or I find that I can not deal with, I will ask for help from the duty officers or the master.
3. Do you like drinking alcohol? As far as you know, what is the maximum blood alcohol

Questions for the OS
普通水手要能能够基本介绍一下自己的工作经历；也要熟悉一些简单的船上工具、设备、仪器用语、常用舵令和车钟英语，还要知道一些日常英语。也有一些船东喜欢让刚刚毕业的练习生做OS，但根据国家有关规定，以后大学毕业生就不允许做OS了。
