The study compared tobacco use initiation(开始) among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not burnable tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or burnable tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. During the first and following six months after being surveyed, respectively 30.7 and 25.2 percent of e-cigarettes users started using burnable tobacco products compared to only 8.1 and 9.3 percent of nonusers.

The availability of the study results is based on scientific methods. Data were collected as part of a long-lasting survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles. The study surveyed students from 10 public high schools selected because of their diverse demographic(人口统计学) characteristics and proximity(接近). The analysis focused on 2,530 students who initially reported never using burnable tobacco and underwent follow-up assessments (评估)after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of any tobacco products.

NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D suggested that we should continue to attentively watch teen smoking patterns despite the declined tendency . He said, “E-cigarettes deliver nicotine(尼古丁) to the lungs by producing a harmful chemical that the users absorb into their bodies. Although they might not have the same dangerous effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”

The first author on the study, Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D claimed that the popularity of entertaining e-cigarette use among teens of nonsmokers resulted from the enjoyment of breathing in nicotine by e-cigarettes. “Although they could be more likely to experiment with other nicotine products, we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking. However, recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately continue the widespread of smoking-related illness.
