B Together with her mother and baby sister, a girl is sorting(分拣)waste by hand. The waste in front of her, mainly plastic bottles and metals, looks like a small mountain.

This is a scene in the town of Guiyu, Guangdong province. Workers there recycle millions of tons of imported(进口的)waste (also called “foreign garbage”) every year. Dealing with the waste -much of which is toxic(有毒的)-has led to illness, the Economic Information Daily reported.

But thisisexpected to change. Chinahasbanned(禁止)solidwasteimports sincethe beginning of this year. The ban includes 24 kinds of waste, such as plastics and unsorted paper. These materials come from countries like the US and UK.

However, importing this waste has brought more risks than benefits. Waste that can’t be used is either burned or buried. Water that is used to wash the waste is allowed to flow into nearby rivers. This has polluted the air, soil and water, posing a risk to public health.

In addition, the amount of waste produced by China itself has increased rapidly. More Chinese recycling companies are finding ways to recycle this waste and get more raw materials, China Daily noted.

Where will foreign waste go? This ban has had a huge influence on countries that export(出口)waste to China. Many of them don’t have enough recycling infrastructure(基础设施)to deal with the waste. In the UK, waste is building up at recycling plants(工厂)around the country and will continue to build in the coming months, according to the Guardian. 20.
