“What can I do to mend it?”

She looked at me with a wondering distrust which was much more to my mind than her whole-hearted confidence.

“Now tell me what?s wrong with me?” “I?m in love with somebody else,” said she. It was my turn to jump out of my chair.

“It?s nobody in particular,” she explained, laughing at the expression of my face: “Only an ideal. I?ve never met the kind of man I mean.” “Tell me about him. What does he look like?” “Oh, he might look very much like you.”

“How dear of you to say that! Well, what is it that he does that I don?t do? I?ll have a try at it, Gladys, if you will only give me an idea what would please you.”

“Well, it is never a man that I should love, but always the glories he had won; for they would be reflected upon me. Think of Richard Burton! When I read his wife?s life with him I could so understand her love! And Lady Stanley! Did you ever read the wonderful last chapter of that book about her husband? These are the sort of men that a woman could love with all her soul, and yet be the greater, not the less, on account of her love, honored by all the world as the inspirer of noble deeds.” “And if I do……”

Her dear hand rested upon my lips. “Not another word, Sir! You should have been at the office for evening duty half an hour ago; only I hadn?t the heart to remind you. Some day, perhaps, when you have won your place in the world, we shall talk it over again.” 58. Why did the writer often come round to the Chestnuts? A. To hear Mr. Hungerton?s views upon bimetallism. B. To find the opportunity of staying with Gladys.

C. To talk with Mr. Hungerton about his proposal to Gladys. D. To discuss the present economy with Gladys. 59. What can we infer from the passage?

A. It took great patience and courage for the writer to propose to Gladys. B. Mr. Hungerton tried to stop the writer from proposing to his daughter. C. Gladys had found an ideal husband from her friends.

D. It was impossible for the writer to have any chance to marry Gladys. 60. Which of the following words can best describe Gladys? A. Careful, mean and stubborn. B. Unfriendly, cold and self-centered. C. Lovely, confident, and idealistic.

D. Simple-minded, active and attractive

Are we too quick to blame and slow to praise? It seems that while most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism, we are somehow unwilling to give others the warm sunshine of praise.

It?s strange how mean we are about praising. Perhaps it?s because few of us know how to accept praise gracefully. Instead , we are embarrassed and ignore the words we are really so glad to hear. Because of this defensive reaction, direct praise is surprisingly difficult to give.

Do you ever go into a house and say, “What a tidy room!” Hardly anybody does. That?s why housework is considered such a boring job. Shakespeare said, “Our praises are our wages.” Since so often praise is the only wage a housewife receives, surely she is worthy of praise.

Mothers know naturally that for children an ounce of praise is worth a pound of scolding. Still, we seldom realize children?s small achievements and then apply the rule. One day I was criticizing my children for quarrelling. “Can you never play peacefully?” I shouted. Susanna looked at me, confused. “Of course I can,” she said. “But you don?t notice us when we do.”

Teachers agree about the value of praise. “I believe that a student knows when he has handed in something above his usual standard,” writes a teacher, “and that he is hungry for a brief comment in the margin to show him that the teacher knows it, too.”

Behavioral scientists have done countless experiments to prove that people have a tendency to repeat an act which has been immediately followed by a pleasant result. In one such experiment, a number of schoolchildren were divided into three groups and given arithmetic tests daily for five days. One group was constantly praised for its previous performance; another group was criticized; the third was ignored. Not surprisingly, those who were praised improved dramatically. Those who were criticized improved, too, but not so much. And the scores of the children who were ignored hardly improved at all. Interestingly, the brightest children were helped just as much by criticism as by praise, but the less able children, who reacted badly to criticism, needed praise the most.

To give praise costs the giver nothing but a moment?s thought and a moment?s effort—perhaps a quick phone call to pass on good comments, or write an appreciative letter. It is such a small investment — and yet consider the results it may produce. We will not only bring joy into other people?s lives, but also, very often, add happiness into our room. “I can live for two months on a good compliment.” said Mark Twain.

Recently, a heated discussion was held in our class on whether to use traditional Chinese characters or simplified ones. Opinions are divided as to the subject.

Seventy per cent of the students are in favor of using simplified Chinese characters. They argue that simplified Chinese characters are easier to learn and write, which helps promote the widespread use of Chinese culture. In addition, they are more likely to meet the needs of our fast- paced lifestyle in modern society.

On the contrary, the rest of the students hold an opposite view. They believe that traditional Chinese characters, with long history and deep significance, look more beautiful. They have become part of our Chinese traditional culture. As a matter of fact, they make it easier for us to communicate with other Chinese people all over the world.

In my view, no one can tell which of them are more suitable for Chinese people when we enjoy the convenience of using simplified Chinese characters while appreciate the abundant meanings of the traditional ones. While I prefer the simplified ones, I think it better to learn to read and write the traditional ones, especially for teenagers.
