Are Li Ziqi’s works a kind of cultural export(输出)?

By Zhang Zhouxiang |Chinadaily. com. cn Updated 2019-12-06 15:03

Who is Li Ziqi?

For 7 million watchers on YouTube and 20 million micro bloggers on Sina Weibo, that’s an easy question to answer. She and her team like showing the whole process from the field to the table. For example, in her video about spicy tofu, she starts with harvesting the soy beans, grinding(磨碎) them into powder and making the powder into tofu, then to cook it.

Yet on Friday, a question about her has become hot on micro blog:“Are Li Ziqi’s works a kind of cultural export?” By 14:00, the reading count reached 470 million, with 36,000 discussions. Many argue that her videos are about daily life, and therefore she is not a symbol of Chinese culture.

But why should she be a “symbol” of Chinese culture? She is just telling the world something about the Chinese culture and there is no reason to honor her so heavy a title. Many ordinary people ranging from volunteers to media workers have dedicated ( 奉献 ) themselves to fighting the novel coronavirus. They prove that ordinary people can still do their part during difficult times.

On Feb 12, Dalian (not his real name) was taking a train to Changsha, Hunan, for a business trip. While on the train, he went into a carriage (车厢) to have lunch and chose to remain in the carriage. He did not realize that the carriage was only for people heading to Wuhan.

Several hours later, when the train arrived in Wuhan, Dalian was asked to get off, as he was in the special carriage. Although he was surprised, he didn’t want to cause trouble and got off the carriage with just a single bag.

As Wuhan had been locked down because of the epidemic(流行病), Dalian couldn’t find a hotel to stay in. Feeling at a loss, he saw a notice online looking for volunteers to work in hospitals. The payment was 500 yuan a day. Dalian decided to give it a try. He soon became a volunteer at Wuhan No 1 Hospital. He was responsible for taking out trash, mopping (拖) the floor, disinfecting (消毒) the hospital, dealing with used protective suits and bringing meals to patients.

The young man, reportedly from northeast China, had to work 12 hours every day, changing his protective suit three times a day. While working, he couldn’t drink anything or go to the bathroom. He also had to have close contact with infected patients, which is risky.

Dalian was afraid of getting infected at first. “When I entered the wards (病房), I was kind of frozen and felt like I couldn’t move,” he said. But after seeing more patients get better, his fear gradually went away.

Dalian’s story has since gone viral (走红的) online. People were surprised by his

I had the habit of skipping to the last pages of a book. I just wanted to see how it ended while I was still in the middle of it. I was used to telling others the endings of the stories before they finished their reading. This habit annoyed (惹恼) first my mom, then my friends, and finally even my own daughter. Finally one day my daughter said angrily, “Dad, please just read a book one page at a time like everyone else.”

At times I have also tried to skip ahead in my own life and figure out what to do months and even years from now, instead of enjoying each day. I knew that the book of my life wasn’t done yet and I had many pages left to go. Still, that didn’t stop me from trying to find the ending half-way through. Time and again, I would foolishly jump ahead and try to solve every possible problem before it happened.

Life, however, doesn’t work like that. Many of my friends often remind me to relax, slow down and discover the joy in each day. Recently when I found myself returning to that bad habit of rushing ahead and living in the future again, I found a truth coming from the lips of a special soul, who gently told me I needed to “live one day at a time”. When I heard those words, I smiled, turned the book of my life back to the right page, and thanked God for today.

God loves to surprise us, and you never know what new problem, change, or opportunity each new day will bring. There is no skipping ahead in the book of life. Each of us has to live it one page and one day at a time. Each of us has to have faith in God to help us to write it line by line and moment by moment. Each of us has to believe that our life will certainly has its ending.
