Drriinnggg! That’s the sound children across the country do not want to hear—the alarm bell (闹铃). This means children across the UK have to wake up bright and early to go to school. But students at one school in north-east England can lie in for one more hour before they go to school. Monkseaton High School says it’s OK for students to come into school an hour later than other schools.

The headmaster, Dr Paul Kelley, says that it helps students to be more active in class. He feels that young people work better later in the day and a late start may be better for their school life than an early one.

Dr Kelley told the BBC that teenagers don’t work very well in the morning and their need to sleep is biological (生物学的).

This new approach (做法) to teaching shows good results. The school has already seen a drop in the number of students playing truant (逃学) by 27%. More importantly, Dr Kelley also said that exam results have improved by 20-30% over the past year.

Lessons at Monkseaton High School begin at 10 a.m. and finish at 3.40 p.m. However, the school opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying: Friends are God’s way of taking care of us. But how do you find real friendship and keep it?

“The Care and Keeping of Friends” by American author Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends.

Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.

First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints(抱怨) and do their best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.

But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to them. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.

Sally says there are three steps to being friends again: Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. The book also has advice on some small but important things like celebrating your friends’ success. Even if you haven’t had a real friend before, you will start to think of having one if you read this book. Because the book tells that friendship is the most important thing in your life. ( ) 11. Ladies and gentlemen, I’m very glad to have all of you here. First, let me introduce the People’s Park to you. It is one of the largest parks in Yancheng. The ticket for an adult is 80 yuan. The children over 1.2 metres in height can pay half of the price, and the ones under 1.2 metres can enter the park for free. The park is open from 9:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 8:30 to 18:30 on weekends. By the way, while visiting the park, you mustn’t play with fire. That would be very dangerous. A terrible fire might happen. You mustn’t feed the animals. Besides, you mustn’t throw litter about. Wish you a good time here!
