Unit 9 Shopping

Useful Information

Shopping was once a local activity conducted out of daily necessity. If people could not find the things they needed fairly near their homes, it was rarely feasible to look elsewhere. There were small neighborhood shops and vendors along the streets with little variety to choose from, and marketplaces or bazaars where many vendors could gather, but no modern malls or department stores. The marketplace or the bazaar might be some distance from home, and travel was often on foot. The best way to get a good bargain was to be a good haggler (讨价还价者), and the honesty of vendors was sometimes suspect. One might never see them again, and receipts were rarely given. The producer and the vendor were often one and the same, with no factories to standardize production and protect quality. The tradition of craftsmanship was the consumer’s best protection.

Nowadays malls and department stores have almost everything you may need and many things you don’t ever want. If you have a car or other quick and convenient transportation, you can go to a mall to window shop or comparison shop to your heart’s content. Prices are clearly posted with no need to haggle. Receipts are given in case the merchandise is defective. Clerks are trained to be polite and deferential to discourage shopping elsewhere. Refunds and exchanges are usually permitted. The best way to get a good bargain is to buy things out of season or wait for a big sale, such as those which occur shortly after the Christmas holidays. Weekly or monthly trips to a big store or mall can take the place of many daily local shopping trips. Stores encourage this, since their profits are based on volume and rapid turnover of merchandise to make room for new shipments or new products.

Modern marketing is very intense and competitive, often targeting specific audiences such as young people or housewives. Everyone says their products and services are either the best or the least expensive. Of course this cannot always be true, but with the huge variety of items now on the market it’s rarely easy to decide. Some people dislike modern shopping just because of this, and still prefer to shop near home despite the limited variety and higher prices. Others actually enjoy haggling or looking for expert craftsmanship. These are some of the reasons why small convenience stores are so popular and street vendors or small shops can still survive, alongside the small “mom and pop” restaurants which some people still prefer to McDonald’s or KFC. The modern flea market is also a place where one can get some of the cultural flavor of the traditional bazaar, though the merchandise is rarely new. The quality of used merchandise may be better at consignment (寄售,托销) shops where vendors sell used items on behalf of many individuals.

Consumers who insist on legal protection should shop at well-established stores, which are directly accountable for the quality of their merchandise and tend to provide better service. Most of the large stores also permit payment by check or by credit card. But people who like convenience now have additional options. They may shop by mail or phone from catalogues or TV ads, and they may even shop by computer from ads on websites. Many people have national or international credit cards to make these types of shopping easier, or to use while traveling to avoid the need to carry cash or traveler’s checks.

The purchasing of food was once the main reason people went shopping. Modern packaging and registration have changed this. Now people can shop for almost anything, and for almost any reason including the sheer pleasure of doing so. But the buyer should always beware. The old saying that “a fool and his money are soon parted” is still as true as ever, if not more so. Thieves today are more likely to use a computer, a credit card, or a pen than they are to use their fingers.

Part One Preparation

1. Reading for Information

1) basement 7) basement 2) first floor 8) second floor 3) third floor 9) third floor 4) ground floor 10) second floor 5) ground floor 11) ground floor 6) ground floor 12) third floor

2. Describing the Cartoons 1) ① b ② a ③ d ④ c

② A big woman is climbing onto a floor refrigerator trying to find the freshest milk. Her handbag is on the floor. A shop assistant is standing beside her and looks puzzled. He says: “Madam…the dates on the milk are all the same.”

③ This scene takes place in the paint department of a large store. A woman is holding a bottle of paint in her hand. She wants to show that the paint doesn’t spray, so she sprays it. But unfortunately this time the spray works and it sprays directly onto the shop assistant’s face. Now the shop assistant’s face looks black.

④ A woman is standing in front of an ad. The ad has two magnetic bar codes and says: “TODAY ONLY”, “MARKED DOWN TO”. It is intended to tell consumers that there is a sale. But it doesn’t provide any more information than that. Obviously people don’t know what is on sale or the actual price, since the magnetic bar codes can only be read by electronic scanners. So the woman looks confused.

3. Getting to Know Each Other’s Shopping Habits Samples

― I go shopping once a week and buy some food, such as fruit, cookies, and some stationery. I usually go shopping with my roommates. I enjoy window shopping when I have time. I get the information from newspapers, TV commercials and also my friends. If my friends recommend a particular brand, I’ll buy that myself. I think a private source is more reliable than ads.

― I usually don’t spend much time shopping because I don’t have a lot to buy while at school. My mom does most of the shopping for me before I come to school each new semester, such as clothing, shoes and other daily use items she can think of. At school, I often buy fruit, candies, cookies, drinks, exercise books, stationery, etc. These things are available at campus stores and shopping of this kind can be done on the way to the classroom or back. Sometimes I’ll go down town to buy books and CDs, probably once a month. Very often with my classmates or high school friends who are studying in the same university as I do. I just buy what I need immediately or what I think is good. Shopping is not very important to students, I think.

4. Where would You Like to Make Your Purchase? Samples

― I would definitely like to make my purchase in a supermarket, because compared to other types of shops, supermarkets are more convenient and consumer-friendly. Numerous kinds of commodities are available in a supermarket, which grants us abundant options that we cannot find in any grocery or roadside stores. What’s more, in supermarkets, customers are free to look at and pick up the things they like and are allowed to return goods to the shelves if they decide not to take them after a second thought. This form of consumption avoids some embarrassment which is likely to take place in a department store between shop assistants and consumers. In a word, as a purchaser, I find shopping in a supermarket the easiest, the fastest and the most comfortable. So I prefer to go shopping in supermarkets rather than in other kinds of stores.

― I prefer to go to a department store, or rather a shopping mall. There are varieties of goods for you to choose, and you can always find something you want. Unlike supermarkets, which only provide cheap and common items, department stores have many more categories. Besides, the latest fashions can only be found in department stores.

― I think it depends on what you are going to buy. I don’t always make my purchase in just one place. I usually buy some daily necessities in a supermarket, such as food, stationery and so on. Since we've got so many supermarkets around us, it's very convenient. And you can freely choose what you like. But when it comes to clothing or something quite important, I'd like to go to the department store because of its comfortable atmosphere and the reliable quality. In addition, you'd better listen to the introduction from the shop assistants while buying something expensive.
