Without method, little can be done to any good purpose. Some time ago, I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn‘t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended, as there are a whole lot of antique (古董) shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception. I was quite wrong. The man wouldn‘t even look at my chair.

The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and, the fourth—so I decided that my approach must be wrong.

I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, ― Would you like to buy a chair?‖

He looked it over carefully and said, ―Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir ?‖ ―Twenty pounds,‖ I said.

―OK ,‖ he said, ―I‘ll give you twenty pounds. ‖

―It‘s got a slightly broken leg ,‖I said. ―Yes I saw that, it‘s nothing.‖

Everything was going according to plan and I was getting excited. ―What will you do with it?‖ I asked. ―Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.‖ ―I‘ll buy it,‖ I said.

―What do you mean? You‘ve just sold it to me,‖ he said.

―Yes, I know but I‘ve changed my mind. I‘m sorry, I‘ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.‖

―You must be crazy,‖ he said. Then , suddenly the penny dropped. ―I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.‖

―You‘re right,‖ I said. ―And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ?Would you mend this chair for me‘ ?‖

―I wouldn‘t have agreed to do it,‖ he said . ―We don‘t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I‘ll mend this for you , shall we say for five pounds?‖ He was a very nice man and was greatly amused by the whole thing.

Drivers‘ exhaustion sometimes may lead to their unwariness of possible danger while they are driving. A device that stops drivers from falling asleep at the wheel is about to undergo testing at Department of Transport laboratories and could go on sale within 12 months.

The system, called Driver Alert, aims to reduce deadly road accidents by 20%—40% that are caused by tiredness. Airline pilots can also use it to reduce the 30% of all pilot-error accidents that are related to

exhaustion.

Driver Alert is based on a computerized wristband. The device, worn by drivers or pilots, gives out a sound about every four minutes during a car journey. After each sound the driver must respond by squeezing the steering wheel(方向盘). A sensor in the wristband detects this pressing action and measures the time between the sound and the driver‘s response.

Tiredness is directly associated with a driver‘s response time. Usually, a watchful driver would take about 400 milliseconds to respond, but once that falls to more than 500 milliseconds, it suggests that the driver is getting sleepy. In such cases the device gives out more regular and louder sounds, showing that the driver should open a window or stop for a rest. If the driver‘s response continues to slow down, the sounds become more frequent until a nonstop alarm warns that the driver must stop as soon as possible.

The device has been delivered to the department‘s laboratories for testing. If these tests, scheduled for six months‘ time, are successful, the markets will bring the product to market within about a year. 64. According to the text, Driver Alert . A. aims to prevent drivers from sleeping B. has gone through testing at laboratories C. aims to reduce tiredness-related accidents D. has been on sale for 12 months

65. How should a driver respond to the sounds from Driver Alert? A. By sounding a warning. B. By pressing the steering wheel. C. By checking the driving time. D. By touching the wristband.

66. We can learn from the text that the driver needs to stop for a break when his response time is . A. about 400 milliseconds B. over 500 milliseconds C. below 500 milliseconds D. about 4 minutes 67. When the driver gets sleepy while driving, Driver Alert . A. moves more regularly B. stops working properly C. sounds more frequently and loudly D. opens the window for the driver

You know eating fruit and vegetables is virtuous. But did you know it can also make you look good? People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive.

Scientists found eating them subtly increased yellowness and redness in the volunteers‘ skin. They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks. Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look healthier and an extra 3.3 portion could enhance their attractiveness.

Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素), which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer. But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange, it was not known a small increase was noticeable and seen as appealing.

A camera measured changes to the skin‘s redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These redness and yellowness were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin.

There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene which gives tomatoes and red pepers their red colour and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach. Skin colour is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多酚), found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.

A. We‘ve already known eating extreme amounts of carrots can turn skin orange. B. We knew in the past that eating a few more carrots could make us look appealing.

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.

Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect—but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.

Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them—a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for the job, while the absence of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school‘s reputation, unable to compete with the child from the favored school.

The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.

72. The underlined word ―favoritism‖ in paragraph 3 is used to describe the phenomenon that . A. children from well-respected schools tend to have good jobs B. bright children also need certificate to get satisfying jobs

C. poor children with certificates are favored in job markets D. children attending ordinary schools achieve great success
