The purpose of higher education

Hello, it’s my great honor to speak here. Today, I want to talk about the pourse of higher education.

Fistly, I’d like to address myself to the question -- what is the purpose of school? We send our children to school to prepare them for the time they will be big and will have to work for themselves. Nearly everyting they they study at school has some practical use in their life, but is that the only reason that they go to school?

No. There is more in education than just learning facts. We go to school, above all, to learn how to learn, so that, when we have left school, we can continue to learn. The purpose of schools, therefore, is not just to teach languages, arithmetic, geography, etc., but to teach pupils the way to learn.

As to the purpose of higher education, it really differs. Someone hold that:

(a) When people graduated from high school, they are just around eighteens. They are already adults in age, but not mature enough, especially in mind. Neither they have mastered any skill to make living, nor they have ever tried to live by themselves. Thus, higher education plays an important role to make them prepare for the independent life into the society. So, the purpose of higher education is to improve the ability and techniques of the people who are going to work.

While some believe that:

(b) Higher education, to some degree, represents the comprehensive strength of the country, which, undoubtedly, should provide career training, social network and cultivate students’ individual inner qualities.

< the value of education

To figure out the most appropiate answer of what is the purpose of higher education, it is necessaty to understand the value of a college education.

Do you know what the value of a college education is? We gain value from a college

education as we : Learn to think critically;

Learn to have and apply knowledge; Learn to understand ourselves;

Learn to understand ( at least appreciate) others.

What’s more, we alsd gain value from a college education as we: Take the time for mature reflection and contemplation; Become comfortable in a vast array of social contexts; Develop and use leadership skills; Develop or polish basic coping skills.

But, you know what? That value of a college education is really not known at all. They are the values that create opportunities, but remain in embryonic form. The ture value of a college education is unique to each person you get out of a college education what you are willing to invest in it. Education isn’t this magical, mysterios miracle in which the teachers do something mystical to you.

< the purpose of higher education

Finally, I’d like to share my understanding of the purpose of higher education.

Newman says that with a university education, \through life.\just through a career. In terms of knowledge and education, they should not be regarded as just a way to get ahead in the world. \reward.\for you in the future. In another world, a university education doesn’t prepare you for a profession. It may be hard to under stand that because the primary purpose of a university education from a student’s perspective is to get a better job and to make more money. And yet the primary purpose of instructors is to help students develop their clear thinking. However, it should be looked at as beneficial in itself. Knowledge is something that you gain that cannot be taken away from you. It is also something that you continue to gain throughout your life.
