My father was once a fighter pilot instructor and taught navigation when he was in the army during the second World War. After the war, my dad flew for a freight (货运) airline. One year later he quit the job and had a long time rest. In 1955, he decided that he would like to fly again and contacted an old army pal named Ray who had a crop dusting (喷洒农药) business in Northern California. Just before Christmas that year, father sold our house and all the belongings and moved to California to work with Ray.

They worked on the planes on a farm. One day after the work was done, I was driving a car to our house with my dad. Ray asked whether I wanted to have a travel in the plane. I thought it would be a new adventure so I agreed.

The view of the valley below was wonderful. We flew with the birds in the sky. We were high enough to get the whole view and low enough to see details of the terrain below. Wow, how cool! When we got close to the airstrip (飞机跑道), Ray closed the door in case something unexpected happened.

Shortly after closing the doors, we did a few ups and downs, and I got a good hold on the plane. We did a quick climb and then had some heart-stopping turns and dives. Then the plane made a swoop (俯冲) and I screamed. Ray sped down on the top of the ditch (渠) bank that had

been the airstrip. Finally the power was cut. As soon as we stopped rolling, I unlocked the belt and prepared to escape there.

The doors opened and I saw my dad standing near the plane; he was worried. When I looked back, Ray was laughing. Ray told me to take a few deep breaths and consider it as an adventure.
