The famous universities in Britain

There are more than forty universities in Britain. Among them are Oxford and Cambridge. Each university has its own syllabuses, and sometimes they are quite different from those of others. In general, students can get their Bachelor's degree when they pass all the examinations at the end of three or four years of study. The first degree after Bachelor's degree is Master's degree. Students will have to work for at least one year, and hand in one paper, and then they can also get Master's degree. In fact, it usually takes students more than one year.

Oxford and Cambridge are the most famous universities in Britain, even in the world. They are not the same as the other universities. Each student with Bachelor's degree will get Master's degree after his or her seven-year full-time study there. Of course, they must pay the necessary fees.

Oxford and Cambridge are nearly the same. They are both quite excellent, but they aren't only for upper and upper-middle classes as public schools do. The two universities both have colleges. If one student wants to become a member of the university, he or she first has to enter a college. The biggest college is Christ Church of Oxford. Colleges choose their new students according to their merits. But sometimes they also admit several students who are good at sports, or children of eminent citizens or of millionaires.

Oxford is more tolerant than Cambridge, and from 1945 to 1974, except Churchill, every Prime Minister of Britain was an Oxford graduate. But Cambridge is more developed than Oxford in scientific studies.

Until the 19th century, there were no other universities apart from Oxford and Cambridge in England.
