E-mail: 52asking@163.com

三、阅读理解

A Cloning your lovely cat after it passes away might be great for your breaking heart. But cloning has a darker side too. If cloning technology fall into the wrong hands, there could be far greater problems than one coming face to face with oneself while on the street some day. The former United Nations Secretary- General Kofi Annan, speaking on November 18th at the Swiss university town of St. Gallen, warned of “catastrophic(灾难性的” results of the misuse of the technology. The recent cloning of the deadly Spanish Flu virus by Us Scientists is the cause of Annan’s fear. He urged all people to seriously think about the use of the double-edged sword, which may bring both benefits and harm. He even compared advanced biotechnology to nuclear power. “We find ourselves at a point similar to the one in the 1950s, when far-sighted citizens, scientists, diplomats(外交官)and international civil servants recognized the huge possible harm of nuclear power,” Annan said in his speech.

The Spanish Flu killed about 21-22 million people worldwide from 1918-1919. In order to find a possible treatment, US scientists successfully cloned the virus in October. Annan’s fear of the misuse of biotechnology is not unreasonable. Biotechnology, including cloning, offers great promise to both rich and poor nations in terms of medical treatment, environmental protection and food security. But it also brings the danger of biological weapons being developed. Even a small accident in a lab could cause a disaster. Annan called for global co-operation on the use and control of biotechnology. The world should establish safeguard(预防措施)against biological weapons and other risks. “How to reach workable measures is a subject crying out for focused global debate,” he said. 36. Which of the following is NOT a possible outcome(结果) of the use of cloning? A. Biological weapons B. Running into yourself on the street C. Nuclear power D. A cure for the Spanish Flu 37. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. A Cure for the Spanish Flu B. Our Future with Biotechnology C. Global Co-operation for Biotechnology D. Dangerous Clones 38. The underlined part can be replaced by ________. A. urgently requiring B. regardless of C. widely including D. rather than 39. From the passage we can infer that ________. A. the author would like readers to do all they can to stop cloning B. the author feels that although there are many benefits in cloning, there are also many risks C. the author thinks nothing of the risks of cloning D. Kofi Annan would like to see governments stop giving money for clone research. B According to the report by the China News Weekly, Chinese white collars are becoming fully occupied in the office. They pursue many of their activities in the office building, eating, doing exercises, resting, playing games or even dating. In large cities such as Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing, where economy is developing at a fast speed, office workers face an increasing work pressure day by day and many of them have begun to make office their home. As the young generation in society, most of them are aged between 25 and 45. The young boy is an HIV carrier and has been studying in this school for the past two years. Liangliang’s father used to be a sailor on a foreign ship. Unfortunately, when he returned his home-village 10 years ago, he was found infected with HIV. AIDS is caused by HIV, which commonly causes the death of the infected person in 7 to 10 years by destroying their immune system.

The father infected Liangliang’s mother and the mother spread the disease to Liangliang before he was born.

Liangliang and his parents have had a healthy life over the past eight years. Although research has concluded that normal interaction, such as eating or swimming together does not transmit HIV/AIDS, educating the main ways to infect others are by receiving infected blood transfusions, through birth, etc.

When Liangliang first went to the local school, many of the other students’ parents immediately took their children back.

Liu Yangqing, deputy head of the township government of Liangliang’s village, recalled, “We had been trying to persuade parents that it is safe for their children to stay with Liangliang, but no one believe this.” But the local government said that Liangliang could not lose his right to an education. It decided to establish a one-child school with only one teacher. Wang Lijun, 57, a retired director of the culture station of Liangliang’s town, became Ligliang’s teacher. E Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to ensure time in front of the television have been invented in the UK.

The shoes -- dubbed Square Eyes -- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day's efforts.

The design was inspired by a desire to combat the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, said Gillian Swan, who developed Square' Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. \looked at current issues and childhood obesity (过度肥胖) really stood out,\she told New Scientist. \解决) that with my design.\ Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically (自动地) switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps. Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended, daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.
