Does the phenomenon of latchkey children have a good effect on children’s growth? Why?

A: Honey, would you like to watch TV with me? B: I’m sorry mom, but I don’t feel like to. A: Well, if you say so.

A: Don’t you think that our daughter’s quite strange these days? She doesn’t even talk to me any more. I think my job has taken too much of my time, maybe I should quit and just stay at home to be a housewife, then I can take care of her.

C: Oh are you crazy? What about the tuition fees and the housing expenses? You know my job can’t afford that much. I know you must be nervous about the growth of our daughter, but it is OK to give her more free time. She can learn how to be an independent girl and do things by herself. It can help her stimulate a sense of independency and responsibility. So don’t worry. But if you can’t help thinking about it, maybe you can go and talk to her. A: All right.

C: Darling, could we talk to you for a second? B: Sure, what’s up?

A: Well, I think my job has affected the relationship between us and I’m thinking about giving it up, what do you think?

B: Come on, mom. I don’t think it is a problem. Actually I’m very proud of you because you are so good at dealing the job and all the housework. After you got that job, I realized how difficult it is to settle all the housework and what’s more, now I have more time to perfect my skill in painting. So it is not bad for me to be a latchkey child, at least I think so.

A: So you don’t feel hurt and resentful? B: Absolutely not.

C: See? That’s what I mean. So stop about that quitting thing and hey, why not having a picnic together this weekend. We will have a wonderful time I’m sure.

UNIT5

Should learners aim to speak English with a native-speaker pronunciation? why?

A: Hey, listen. The rain of Spain stays mainly on the plain. What do you think? B: Well, that’s quite funny.

A: No no, I mean my pronunciation. Isn’t that native? B: Why are you trying to speak like the perfect BBC English?

A: I think it’s more official and I should improve my pronunciation so that I can talk to those native speakers easily. Don’t you feel stupid speaking English with an accent? The chenglish is terrible. People will make fun of you when you speak like that. C: Well, I can’t agree with you. Personally, I prefer a foreigner to speak with a recognized foreign accent, so that I know that I’m talking to a Frenchman, a German, an Indian, and so on. So for me, it’s not that important to speak with a native-speaker pronunciation.

A: But if the accent is so strong that you have struggle to understand what they are trying to say, then that gets in the way of the conversation.

B: I think C didn’t mean an accent as strong as that, she’s talking about the kind of accent whereby you can tell immediately which country the person come from, but which doesn’t prevent you from following what they’re saying. And I suppose it’s the kind of accent most foreigners have, really.

A: Well, that’s quite reasonable. Maybe I should spend more time better broadening my vocabulary and knowledge of the country.

C: Yeah, English is such an international language, we should accept a wider range of accents and learners should concentrate more on structure and vocabulary than accent.
