M:Hi,young lady,can I help you?

W:Well...yeah.I’m looking for a Father’s Day’s gift. M:Okay.How about getting your father a new wallet? W:Hmm...how much is that wallet? M:Huh...which one? W:The brown one. M:Oh.It’s only$30.95.

W:Huh?That’s too expensive for me.Do you have a cheaper one? M:Hmm.How about this black leather one?

W:Umm...I don’t think my father will like the design on the outside, and it doesn’t have a place to put pictures. How much is it anyway?

M:Sales of cigarettes in the Dong’an Department Store in Wangfujing street—Beijing’s biggest shopping center-went back to normal yesterday, showing that No-smoking Day on Thursday had little effect on Chinese smokers in the capital.

The store, which satisfies around 150,000 customers a day, continued its daily cigarette sales of 10,000 yuan yesterday following the No-smoking Day,which called on all shops in Beijing, including those that run secretly,to stop selling cigarettes for a day.

But the one-day no-smoking activity did result in the seller losing more than 10,000 yuan on Thursday, according to Wei Jiang, the manager of the store’s food and drink department.

“We didn’t sell a single cigarette even though some smokers begged us to,”Wei said.

He said the sales volume of cigarettes in the first quarter of this year reached 800,000 yuan, about 33 percent higher than the figure for the same period last year.

The store’s cigarette counter offered more than 60 brands of cigarettes, most of which were filter tipped, with prices ranging from three or four yuan down to 0.17 yuan a packet.

When I wake up on a summer morning,I know I am going to my favorite place to volunteer and make a difference in someone’s life just by being with him or her-a summer school for autistic(患孤独症的)children.

By helping the kids read or do math,I am not only teaching important skills but also helping them feel like any other kid. There are many wrong ideas about autism. The kids I worked with can think and feel. They need help only in certain areas.

Of course, each kid is special. For example, some kids like to draw, and others like to sing. At the school, the kids learn through about 20 activities. These activities can help them learn skills they will need later in life.

The very first day I volunteered,a boy came up to me,put his hand on my shoulder, and said“Hello”.From then on,I knew I could make a difference.

Another boy loved to have me read books that could help him learn to read.Sometimes he could be encouraged to read a few words or sentences. Finally, one day during reading practice,he read nearly 220 words himself!

Summer school is also a time for fun.Last summer bagpipes(风笛)players came to perform. Most of us had our hands over our ears because they were so loud. When they asked for a volunteer from the audience, one girl raised her hand as high as she could, got up on stage, and even tried the bagpipes in front of everyone.

Through these experiences,I realize that the challenges these kids face do not stop them from doing many amazing things.I’m teaching them, but they are teaching me more.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means“one who offers his or her services.”There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks.Volunteers may

work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves.Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.

At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people.Tracy,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a ____________new_idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.

“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world.I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school,I,too, wanted to try her kind of work.So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”

“I was asked to work in a home for sick people.I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch.I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up.I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I had helped them.To be honest,I don’t think I was helping very much.It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
