Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. -

According to the research findings published recently, people who regularly work 11 hours or more each day are more than twice as likely to experience depression than their colleagues who stick with an eight-hour work day.

During the 5-year study on 2000 London office workers, other factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and general health are controlled as these factors are believed to also have effects on people?s depression state.

According to the research, long working hours affect us not because of the pressure and

intensity of work itself. They affect us because we don?t have enough time for all the other things we need for good mental health, such as good quality sleep, relationships, and opportunities for

rest and exercise. Every time we squeeze more work in, many of us will be squeezing something else out.

Besides, a previous study by the same researchers also found that overtime work was linked with a 60 percent increase in heart disease.

Questions:

11. Which of the following factors is not mentioned to affect one?s depression state? 12. Why does overtime work make people depressed? - 13. What is the passage mainly about?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.

What happens to a town when its people won?t pay taxes to keep it going? The tiny town of Loyalton, South Dakota of America, actually closed down.

From the very beginning, railroads were being built across the West and it was the railroad that gave Loyalton its start. The town never grew very big, but there was always plenty of activity. In the early 1900?s Loyalton was still a busy little town. About 200 people lived there. The town had grocery stores, meat markets, as well as a restaurant and an iron company. -

In the 1920?s, however, hard times came to Loyalton. A fire in 1930 destroyed several

buildings and most importantly, a tornado in 1933 made the biggest damage, which marked the beginning of everything. From then on, people began to move out. By 1975, the high school and post office had closed.

By 1982, only two buildings remained on the main street. Only five residents stayed. But all

five were retired people who couldn?t afford even the small amount of money to run Loyalton. Therefore, Loyalton finally will disappear from the map of South Dakota.

(Now listen again, please)

Questions:

14. How did Loyalton grow into a small town at beginning?

15. What was the fatal disaster for the gradual disappearance of Loyalton? - 16. Why did the last five residents decide to let the town disappear?

W: I see and what?s your occupation if you don?t mind. M: No, not at all. I am a librarian with the National library.

W: Wow, cool job. And what?s your nationality? You know we charge domestic citizens and

foreigners differently.

M: Oh I understand. Luckily, I am pure British. -

W: Yeah, now the building has become one of the most famous tourist attractions in the US. M: And when I went there, it was crowded. But can you imagine when it was opened much of its

office space went without being rented. W: Why was that?

M: Partly because of the great depression at that time but the real reason is its poor location,

which placed it far from public transportation. W: Oh I see.

M: However, its Observation deck has always been a success ever since its opening.

W: Yeah, people from all over the world gathered there taking pictures and having a bird?s eye
