Surfing is something people often get hooked on after trying it a few times. For many surfers it is much more than a hobby — they would probably agree with the American professional surfer Kelly Slater when he said, “Once you’re in, you’re in. There’s no getting out.”

Surfing, of course, means riding on waves in the ocean using a surfboard. Many surfers stand up on their boards, which requires good balance and is therefore difficult for most beginners to learn, but some lie down.

The history of surfing probably began with the Polynesian people of the Pacific Islands. One of the first white people to see anyone surfing was the British explorer Captain Cook, when his ship arrived in Hawaii in 1778. He watched many Hawaiians riding waves on large pieces of wood, and saw that “they seem to feel a great pleasure.”

When surfing started to become popular in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, surfers used large wooden boards (often more than 3 metres long) that were quite heavy. Boards today are almost always shorter and also much lighter because they are made of artificial materials instead of wood.

For anyone who wants to try surfing, the only essential things are waves and a board. There are a few other things, however, that most surfers find important: a rope to attach one of their ankles to the board and therefore stop the board going a long way when they fall off; wax, which they put on the surface of the board to help their feet stick to it; and a wetsuit to help them keep warm in cold water. The southwest of England is an example of a place where surfers usually need wetsuits, even in the summer, because the water is so cold.

Surfing has been a professional sport for many years, and the very best surfers are able to make a living from it. Most of the best professional surfers in the last thirty years, both men and women, have been American or Australian, but surfers from Brazil, Peru and South Africa have also won important competitions.

I love my BlackBerry — it’s my little connection to the larger world that can go anywhere with me. I also love my laptop computer as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices and truly communicate with others.

On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas. Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy.

Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students assume that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth to that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students.

The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly engage complex ideas. Interruptions by technology often break conversation and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently and make connections between the course material and the class discussion.

I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and the evaluations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create. Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.

I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up.

5. The underlined word “engage” in Paragraph 4 probably means “__________”. A. change

B. explore

C. accept

D. refuse

6. According to the author, the use of technology in the classroom may _________.

2

A. help students to better understand complex themes B. encourage students to have in-depth conversations C. keep students from doing independent thinking D. affect students’ concentration on course evaluation

7. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author __________. A. think highly of technology-free dialogues in his class B. will change his teaching plan soon C. will give up teaching history D. is quite stubborn

Two dolphins race around in a big pool in the Ocean Park. The smaller dolphin Grace, shows off a few of her tricks, turning around and waving hello to the crowd. The most amazing thing about her, however, is that she’s even swimming at all. She doesn’t have a tail.

Grace lost her tail as a baby when she got caught up in fish trap. When the dolphin arrived at the Ocean Park in December 2005, she was fighting for her life. “Is she going to make it?” Her trainer, Abbey Stone, feared the worst. Grace did make it –but her tail didn’t. She ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle.

Over the past six years, she has learned to swim without her tail. Dolphins swim by moving their flukes and peduncles up and down. Grace taught herself to move another way –like a fish! She pushed herself forward through the water by moving her peduncles from side to side.

The movement put harmful pressure on Grace’s backbone. So a company offered to create a man-made tail for her. The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn’t hurt her.

The first time Grace wore the artificial tail, she soon shook it off and let it sink in the bottom of the pool. Now she is still learning to use the tail. On some days she wears it for an hour at a time, on others not at all. “The tail isn’t necessary for her to feel comfortable,” says Stone, “but it helps to keep that range of motion and build muscles.”

Now the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month, Grace will star in Dolphin Tale, a film that focuses on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her. Seeing Grace swim with her man-made tail gives people so much courage.

8. When Grace first arrived at the Ocean Park, her trainer worried about her _______. A. chance of survival C. physical build A. let her recover faster

B. potential ability

D. adaptation to the surroundings B. make her comfortable

D. adjust her way of swimming

9. A man-made tail is created for Grace to __________. C. help her perform better tricks A. treat animals friendly C. stick to their dreams

10. The story of Grace inspires people to __________.

B. face difficulties bravely D. treasure what they have

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Successful public speaking centers on the physical message of presentation. ___11__ _ It includes posture, eye contact and gestures — how you move your hands or arms.

We have all seen nervous presenters in classrooms and meetings. One effect of being nervous is moving from side to side. 12 In fact an audience can lose interest in a speaker who does not move. How a speaker moves is important. Whole-body movement should slow and planned to control attention. Such movement helps to communicate confidence.

New public speakers know that they should look at the audience while they speak. But they look at their notes on a paper or at the screen if they have an electronic presentation.

The same thing is with eye contact. Some of them find it really difficult — making eye contact with the audience, because they’ll be looking at their notes, they’ll be looking at the screen, they’ll be looking at the floor. The problem of having notes and trying to talk from notes often is a big problem. 13

The best way to avoid this problem is to use images and few words for notes instead of sentences. The image should help communicate the point you want to make. Writing a few words with the image on your slide helps you remember that point. 14 A good way to change your body language is to make a video of your presentation and

watch yourself. This helps you to become aware of what you need to change. 15 When you practice remember these important tips: Be aware of your posture, eye contact and gestures. Record yourself using a phone, tablet or camera. Watch yourself and plan what you will do to improve.

A. A speaker needs to focus on his speech all the time. B. A presenter does not need to stand perfectly still. C. Then you can look at the audience while speaking. D. Some call this “body language”. E. Your eyes will speak your mind secretly.

F. An important part of public speaking is practice. G. So they have trouble with eye contact.
