If you've ever been annoyed by the sound of someone eating, especially as they noisily slurp noodles, don't worry, you're not alone.

A company has recently designed a fork that connects to an app on your smart phone, which will then play noise cancelling sounds if you happen to slurp your noodles too loudly.

The fork was designed with a microphone in its handle that is trained to recognize the sound of slurping. The microphone will then send a signal to the phone app, setting off the noise cancelling sounds.

The company that designed the fork, called Otohiko fork, was inspired by what is called \by social media users, which is running wild in Japan.

\,consider it proper and even preferable to suck up one's noodles with a loud slurping sound\

Unfortunately for visitors, however, such enthusiastic slurping tends to grate on their nerves, which is what lead to the creation of the phrase\

The company behind the fork, Nissin, is the very same company that invented Cup Noodles, who brought instant noodles to the world nearly 70 years ago, so they are definitely concerned about whether or not foreigners are put off by the sound of slurping noodles.

The fork is being sold for a good $130, but those bothered enough by noodle slurpers will likely find it well worth the money.

Nissin is only planning a limited run of 5000 forks for the time being, which can now be pre-ordered only through their website.

The company is planning to begin releasing them just in time for the holidays. Of course, it still remains to be seen if the fork can be programmed to drown out the sound of loud chewers, which is probably of greater concern to sensitive Westerners.

24.From the text we can know that_________.

A.\B.the app on a smart phone operates just like a silencer C.the microphone in its handle stops the slurping sound D.the Otohiko fork will encourage noodle sales in Japan 25.The new fork will be the most helpful for______. A.the spread of Japanese culture B.fans of Japanese noodles C.Western visitors to Japan D.the reform of Japanese food 26.Which of the following can be the best title ? Plants can do arithmetic (算术), No, it’s not that they are doing quadratic equations (二次方程) or some such. It is found that plants do perform what could best be called arithmetic division overnight to help themselves make it through the night without starving.

During the day, plants feed themselves by taking energy from the sun and changing carbon dioxide into sugars and starches (淀粉). But at night, they have to rely on the starches they’ve stored up to survive till dawn returns.

Plants are found to share out their stores of starches by making adjustments to how much they consume. During the night, the mechanism inside the leaf measures the size of the starch store and guesses the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock. The size of the starch store is then divided by the length of time until dawn to set the correct rate of starch consumption, so that, by dawn, around 95 percent of the starches are used up. That is, even in the night, plants are still growing and producing. Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to increase crop production.

What’s notable is how efficiently plants share out their starch stores. It is pointed out that if the starch store is used too fast, plants will starve and stop growing during the night. If the store is used too slowly, some of it will be wasted.

However, scientists emphasize that this is not evidence for plant intelligence, but simply suggests that plants have a mechanism designed to automatically regulate how fast they burn carbohydrate (碳水化合物) at night. But it offers a window into the secret life of plants, to questions of plant sentience (感受能力) and, the ability of cooperation of plants with animals. Plants may not do math with a purpose in mind like people do. But anyone who opens the refrigerator containing only a tomato and a jar of peanut butter has to admire plant’s ability to divide their starch stores, their food, with such careful efficiency. 28.Why do plants perform arithmetic division overnight? A.To regulate how fast to store sugars. B.To change carbon dioxide into starches. C.To store the energy from the sun on time. D.To get through the night without starving.

29.The underlined word “mechanism” in the third paragraph may refer to . A.the colored part of a plant from which the seed or fruit develops B.a part of the plant that has a particular purpose such as the root

C.an organized set of ideas or theories or a particular way of doing something D.a system of parts in a living thing that together perform a particular function 30.This finding can be of great help in . A.sports. B.agriculture C.culture D.industry 31.What might be the most suitable title for the passage? A.What Your Plant Is Doing at Night. B.Why Plants Grow Quickly at Night. C.Whether There Is Plant Intelligence. D.How the Internal Clock Affects Plants. D
