According to the investigation results shown in the pie chart above, people differ on theattitude towards waste sorting—52% of the respondents totally support such an idea, with another12% showing reserved consent, while 31% are strongly against it. Meanwhile, 5% of therespondents show no interest in such an issue, taking an indifferent attitude. It seems that the fullimport of waste sorting may take a while to sink in.

Compared with the traditional way of collecting waste, the new method has varieties ofbenefits. For the first thing, wastes are sent to different factories according to their classificationinstead of landfills. Accordingly, less land is occupied with a slighter possibility of secondary pollution caused by waste combustion. Meanwhile, not only does waste classification cut the spending on treating waste, but, beyond most people’s expectation, it generates some handsome profits. Recyclable wastes, such as paper, glass and plastic, can be reused after being processed in related factories, while other wastes can be turned into the valuable. However, there still are a proportion of people who are so stubborn that they are not willing to break their old habit, which has been in the way of popularizing waste sorting.

As far as I am concerned, necessary steps must be taken so as to push forward waste sorting, which entails not only the joint efforts from both the government and the media but also the contribution from the individuals. Government along with the media is supposed to popularize the significance and the necessity of waste sorting;

meanwhile, for us individuals, we should sort out the waste before we dispose it. Only in this way can we live in a more harmonious environment.

It goes without saying that this set of charts aim at revealing a current social problem happening in the schools: students are overburdened with too much homework. According to the left bar chart, an ordinary student may spend as long as 93 minutes in doing their homework every single day, which nearly doubles the time he spends on TV, computer or sports. From the right pie chart, doing homework disproportionately accounts for 39% of a student’s extracurricular time.

What the charts convey is nothing but a norm in the current education system. There are two primary factors which can account for such a phenomenon: the first goes to the schools, the other the parents. On the one hand, schools attach excessive attention to the scores of the students, which seems to be a major measure of the reputation and achievement of a school. Thus, for the sake of its fame and future enrollment, schools would assign a large amount of homework for the students. On the other hand, though caring about the development of their children, parents tend to stress a great deal to the kids’ performance in school, expecting them to be the top ones into the society. Consequently, they send the kids to a variety of art classes after school, which invites extra pressure to their children.

As I see it, students now should be relieved of the excessive pressure from their study. Schools as well as parents are supposed to pay heed to the all-round development of students, which not only includes the intelligence, but also contains

creativity, self-expression and so forth. Just as the old saying goes, “All work no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

In this bar chart, it can be seen that remarkable changes have taken place with regard to the employment of university graduates during the period from 1992 to 2002. In 1992, about 50% of the university graduates worked in state-owned firms, while only 28% of them were working in private firms. As a striking contrast, private firms were favored by almost 50% of the graduates, whereas only 15% of them were willing to work in state-owned firms in 2002.

It is no difficult job for us to come up with some possible factors to account for the above changes. First and foremost, many graduates used to regard the state-owned firms as ideal working places which were steady and high in salary. However, with the development of the economy, an increasing number of graduates find there are many other suitable careers in which they can fully develop their working potentials. Therefore, they want to find jobs in such working places as private firms, graduate schools and so on. In the second place, private firms, which are run under

market-oriented economy, are flexible in management. And university graduates are more likely to apply what they have learned in school to their work. Thus they can have more chances to exert their utmost efforts and to be promoted.

From what has been discussed so far, it is no surprise to see the changes. And it can be predicted that the established trend will continue for quite a while in years to

come.

The above chart clearly reflects the number of students among different age levels who have psychological problems to some degree. The older the children are, the more psychological problems they suffer from. Approximately 65% of the students between 17 to 19 years old have psychological problems, which is the highest among all the four age groups.

There are two major reasons to account for this phenomenon. To begin with, as students, they Face much pressure from both parents and teachers, who always place a great deal of stress on their children’s grades rather than their psychological health. Second, being lonely and confused is the typical characteristic of the students for most of them are the only child in the family, with no sister or brother to share their ideas, even their frustrated feelings in life and schooling.

From my perspective, the psychological problems among the students should not be neglected and some urgent measures should be taken so as to improve the severe situation. First of all, teachers and parents should provide more guidance to the students and often encourage them so that the students will gain more confidence, which in turn will be helpful in both their study and life. In addition, the students should make more friends, thus they can share their feelings with others of the same
