Talking on a mobile phone is expensive, so a lot of people send text messages. Text messages are

much cheaper than talking on a mobile phone, and you can make it even cheaper by shortening the words that you use. You can do this by taking out “unimportant” letters in the words(usually vowels)and using numbers instead of words(2=to, 3=free, 8=ate, so h8=hate, etc.). You can also avoid using punctuation like inverted commas. Here is an example: Im hm nw, why nt gv me a cll?(I’m home now, why not give me a call?) What do you think these text messages mean? Whr hv U bn? Iv bn wtng hrs fr a cll. Do U wnt 2 g 2 th cnma tnite? I gt a txt mssge frm my frnd. Shes hvng a prty on Strdy. Do U wnt 2 cm?

Mobile phone users have developed a series of symbols to show how they feel. They are called emoticons(表情符号), and there are some examples below. To read an emoticon, you have to look at it sideways.

For example, if you say something in a text message which is a joke, you can follow it with a smiling face. Like this:

Why didt u call me? I’m so sad.

A Hindu saint(印度圣人)who was visiting the River Ganges to take a bath found a group of family members on the banks(河岸), shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples(弟子), smiled and asked, “Why do people in anger shout at each other?”

The disciples thought for a while, one of them said, “Because we lose our calm, we shout.” “But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft voice,” asked the saint.

The disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint.

Finally the saint explained, “When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance(疏远)a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the

stronger they will have to shout to hear each other. What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, because their hearts are very close.”

Like humans, dogs donate blood too, and not every dog can donate blood. The dogs are screened(检查)for health first. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be younger than 8 years old. They may donate three or four pints(品脱)a year, which can help animals that are suffering from illnesses like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car. One pint can save up to three dogs.

Owners volunteer their pets for the short procedure(程序), which requires no sedation, a kind of medicine given to calm him or her down. It’s the dog that finally chooses to live still and give. If the dogs want to get up and leave, they can.

Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old black German shepherd, Raina, to the bloodmobile(流动血站)when it was parked at her small village. Sandy said she wouldn’t have troubled herself with highway traffic and city parking problems to take the dog to Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia, which is twice as far from her home. But the bloodmobile made it easy to find out if Raina could donate. “I was very, very excited that she had the right blood that was needed to help another dog out,” said Sandy. “We’ll surely do it again.” 38.
