I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.

The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life’s lessons whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have bee better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits(局限). However, there is nothing you can’t do or learn to be. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰)said, “We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves.”

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have bee smarter since you started to learn a language? According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase(增加) in your brain power. Researchers(研究人员) found that learning other languages changes grey matter--- the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect(影响) is greater when the younger people learn a second

language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were pared with a group of \bilinguals\who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans(扫描) showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before learning a new language, the smaller the difference.

\findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,\to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones has researched the link(联系) between bilingualism and math skills. \two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),\different ideas.\

Therefore, the results showed that the younger one started to learn a second language, the better. Studying a language means you get an entrance(入口) to another world. 49. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions \ A. say language is also a kind of physical work.

四.阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题.(每题2分,共10分)

My favorite great book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in the quiet streets of St Petersburg, Missouri. He's a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave, and finally they find a box of gold. My favorite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides and watches for a time, and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they're also pleased to see him alive.

Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom’s best friend, and Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.

The theme(主题) of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behavior.

Why do I think Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it's still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it's only a story, Twain, wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century. So it sounds very real. Today it's thought to be one of the greatest books in American Literature. Go on---read it! I know you will enjoy it, too.
