In the year 1920, there were many races in New York. People called the prizes of these races apples. A writer John first called New York the Big Apple, because New York is the place that many people dreamed of going to: the biggest prize of all.2·1·c·n·j·y

For Rome, as the name suggests, the answer is simple. Romans believed that no matter what happened to the world, Rome would go on forever. Rome has been an important center of power for more than 2000 years.

As for London, in the Victorian period (1837-1901) it had problems with its air. Later in 1952, serious air pollution made 10,000 people fall ill. But now the air of London has become better. Some people even say the air pollution in Beijing is now like that of Victorian London.www-2-1-cnjy-com

Jamie Oliver loves to teach us his secrets of cooking and eating. He is a lively young British chef. In his first television show, the Naked Chef, Oliver taught everyone to make simple but delicious food. In Jamie’s kitchen, he taught young people how to cook. His next show, Jamie’s School Dinners, is about changing the foods that students eat.

Oliver saw that most schools in Britain were serving junk food that is easy to eat but unhealthy. Although it can be delicious, junk food is not very good for you, and it is sometimes harmful (有害的) for your health. Junk food can also harm children, because it doesn't give them the power they need at school. They sometimes eat too much, and gain too much weight.

Some of the junk food that Oliver wants to change is chicken nuggets, French fries, soda, and muffins. He encourages schools to serve fresh and healthy meats, vegetables, and fruits. He helps the school cooks to make healthy dinners without junk food.

People liked Oliver’s idea of bringing quality food to schools. Thousands enjoyed his television show. But, Oliver wanted them to do more than just watch. At his Feed Me Better website, he collected over 270,000 signatures (签名) from people. They wanted to stop junk food and put healthy food in schools again.

Oliver sent the signatures to Prime Minister Tony Blair. Prime Minister Blair promised to help change the school kitchens, teach school chefs to cook healthy foods, and spend more on school dinners. Thanks to Jamie Oliver, students everywhere in Britain can enjoy more healthy dinners.

There is nothing worse than sitting next to someone and being able to smell their breakfast! In ancient China, people used to chew a special plant to make their breath smell better. Now we use gum (口香糖) to make sure our breath doesn't annoy other people.

Can your breath smells say a lot about your health? According to BBC News, scientists can now tell whether or not somebody has a disease, just from a simple breath test.

How does it work? Breath is made up of something known as “metabolites” (代谢物). Scientists can test “metabolites” to find people’s diseases. Metabolites are the waste that the body makes. Scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology found that metabolites are unique to each person’s breath. They are just like people’s fingerprints (指纹). That’s why scientists sometimes call them “breathprints”, the Daily Mail reported.

Compared to others kinds of tests, a breath test is much quicker. Instead of taking hours it only takes a few minutes. Breath tests are also more convenient. People don't need a container to hold body fluids. They just need to blow into a special machine. This machine will help to test their breath. It has been useful in finding early signs of diseases.

Scientist are doing further tests on breath tests. They also think that these tests will be used on athletes to see whether they are telling lies in the future.
