Great London Smog

500 years ago in Britain, the burning of coal was increasing in cities like London. About 200 years ago, the Industrial Revolution (革命)began in Britain. Factories were built, and more coal was burnt. Coal was used in factories and also used to heat homes. Burning coal made a lot of smoke and made the air pollution.

Air pollution was becoming a really big problem, especially when the weather was foggy. Smoke and fog together create smog(烟雾). Smog was a big problem in winter. Because of the cold weather, more coal was burnt to warm houses and this made more smoke. In 1952, the Great London Smog happened and more than 4,000 people died!

New laws were made in 1956 and 1968, so that disasters (灾难) would not happen again. These laws were called the Clean Air Acts. They encouraged people to use cleaner coal in their homes or switch to the use of other fuels such as gas. Factories started using tall chimneys so that the smoke would go high up in the sky and no longer attack cities. And new factories were built outside cities in the countryside.
