The bag lady

Watching news about the environment on TV can be depressing (令人沮丧的). The problems seem so big that it's difficult to imagine how individuals can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.

Rebecca is a camera woman and she was filming a documentary (纪录片) for the BBC in the Pacific Ocean when she saw something that m 86 her cry-hundreds of dead birds had died because they had eaten some of the plastic that is thrown into the sea each year. Beaches on Pacific islands that should have been some of the most beautiful p 87 in the world were covered with plastic toys, drinks bottles, pens, cigarette lighters—every plastic thing you can think of.

Rebecca decided she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help solve the problem. In her home town of Modbury, she asked

local shopkeepers i 88 they could do one thing to help. She asked them to stop using plastic bags in their shops.

Plastic bags are used everywhere in Britain—every supermarket, every comer shop. The numbers are amazing. Britain uses n 89 17 million plastic bags each year. And the bags can take hundreds of years to break down (降解) because they are chemical rather than n 90 , so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.

To Rebecca's surprise, the shopkeepers agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in Britain. Instead, shops offered reusable cotton bags.

Other towns followed Modbury's e 91 and towns around Britain and around the world are becoming plastic bag free. It won't solve all of the world's

environmental problems, but it shows that people are becoming active and starting to think about how the little things in their daily lives can have a big effect. It also shows us that there is something we can do and that one person can make a big c 92 with a strong enough belief.

Winter is dangerous because it's difficult to know what is going to happen and accidents take p 86 easily. Fog can be waiting to meet you over the top of the hill. Ice might be hiding under the melting snow, waiting ahead to send you off the road. The car coming to you may s 87slip (滑动) across the road.

Rule Number One for driving on icy roads is to drive smoothly. Sudden movements can make a car very difficult to control. So every time you either s 88 or stop your car, reduce your speed, you must be as gentle and slow as p 89 . Imagine you are driving with a full cup of coffee on the seat next to you. Drive carefully so that you wouldn't spill (打断) it.

Rule Number Two is to pay attention to what might happen. The more ice there is, the further down the road you have to look. Test how long it t 90 to gently stop your car. Remember that you may be driving more q 91 than you think. Generally, allow twice of your usual stopping distance when the road is wet, t 92 times this distance on snow, and even more on ice. Try to stay in control of your car at all times and you will not get into trouble. 86. p ______ 87. s _______ 88. s _______ 89. p ______ 90. t_ ______ 91. g ______ 92. t _______
