That wasn’t a _______ day, but we felt very happy because we went to the Shanghai Waterworks Museum (上海自来水博物馆).

First, we went to a grey building. When we entered it, we saw a map on the floor. On the map there was the Yangzi River, the Huangpu River, and so on. Then, we saw a large fish bowl in the wall. But there were only five plastic (塑料的) fish. That means if we waste water, we will no longer see real fish.

Next, we went upstairs. There we saw a big blue poster. There was a water tap at the top of the poster and the Earth was under the water tap. It tells us we should save water. The NO.3121 water supply station was found on the left side of the poster. An old man was writing on the blackboard. Two women were washing some clothes. At that time, there were sands and stones in the water. The man was writing the number of the stones and sands in the water.

After that, we went to the first floor. We took some photographs there.

We left the museum at eleven o’clock in the morning. Every one of us had an interesting and meaningful experience that day.

You want to know about my stay in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.

In China, I began to have English classes five times a week in the fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.

When I first studied English, I was told to say “I am fine” when people say “How are you?”. But in the USA, I found that people always say “I am good” or “I’m tired”.

One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?”. It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say. Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.

To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun getting a tan (晒黑). However, in China, girls try every way possible to get their skin “whiter”.

I was also surprised by how hard-working US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.

The kids here are so talented (有才能的). I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

( )2. The underlined word “confused” means “ ” in Chinese.

( )3. A good US student spends his or her time .

A. only on schoolwork B. just on sports or music C. only in working for the public

D. on studies, sports or music and public work ( )4. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. The writer is now in the US.

B. American girls love to have white skin. C. US students are talented and hard-working.

D. The writer regrets (后悔) that he gave up playing the piano.

四、任务性阅读(每空2分,共10分)。按要求完成下列句子。

You may know the English letters A,B and C. But do you know there are people called ABC? You may like eating bananas. But do you know there is such a thing as a “banana person”? How strange! Are these people from “another earth”? No .They are just Chinese people like you and me. ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside-thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside-lookinng like a Chinese. Do you know why? Usually, ABC know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them do not speak Chinese. Also, they are not interested in Chinese politics.

But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese? Yes ,of course. They are overseas Chinese. These peole may be citizens of another country, like the US ,England or Canada, but they have Chinese blood. Their parents ,grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are not people of the People’s Republic of China .For example, we all know the famous scientist C.N.Yang. He got the Noble Prize in 1957.Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

1. “ABC”in this passage means “________________________________”.
