ABSTRACT

Whiskey possesses a large share in the wine market. In the current market, Whiskey packagings include three categories as paper packaging, plastic packaging, and metal packaging, in which paper packaging accounts for a large proportion of the market. The main purpose of this project is to increase sales through the improving of existing design of paper packaging.

First, current whiskey market status and the problems are analyzed according to market survey data. The main subject of study is determined as the problems that the existing paper packaging’s lack of compression capacity and the structures are monotonous. Design solutions are proposed according to different methods. One solution is a folding carton with the main features of protection and automation; the other is a special-shaped carton based on the structure and shape as the main characteristics. Through analysis of structural stability and visual pleasing of patterns to the design solutions, special-shaped carton with stable structure is chosen as the final solution.

Second, in material selection, single side white board, box board, and thick cardboard are compared in aspects such as the mechanical properties and printing performance. White Board with wide applications and good performance is selected as packaging material.

Last, discussions are taken out on problems such as the size design, Gothic-style decoration design, and manufacturing process. Throughout the design process, every step complies with its basic principles, so that the designs are feasible, operational, and applicable. Designed packaging can be applied to actual production, and provide a useful reference to the field of packaging design.
